Oakham Ales’ Green Devil now available at Wetherspoon pubs across the UK

Customers of Wetherspoon across the country will now get the chance to sample the delights of Oakham Ale's Green Devil IPA.

The award-winning brew from the Peterborough-based brewery is described by Wetherspoon as a 'superb' beer and it appears on the national chain's bottled craft beer shelves.

The popular brew has won the coveted title of Champion Cask Ale two years running at the International Brewing Awards and will be sold at Wetherspoon's 900 pubs in 500ml bottles.

"We are delighted to be featuring on the shelves of Wetherspoon houses as one of its featured craft beers. It is a great chance for customers to enjoy our popular Green Devil IPA," said Oakham's managing director Adrian Posnett.

"We are going from strength-to-strength here at Oakham Ales and look forward to continuing to expand both our range and our outlets," he added.

Wetherspoon, whose annual sales topping £1.5 billion, chose the Oakham beer (6pc) as one of three new bottles adding to the craft range it sells.

"We always aim to give our customers the best range of craft beers available and Green Devil from Oakham is a superb beer which we believe our customers will enjoy," said Wethersoon Operations Director Martin Geoghegan.

The news adds to recent successes for Oakham which has secured a partnership with national restaurant chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen and recently launched a new addition to their keg range with Tiki Blonde.

Oakham Ales enjoys national and international demand for its beers and sells through outlets including Waitrose and Tesco.

Oakham Ales hope to enhance their already-rising national profile following the launch of their latest brew, Tiki Blonde, at the Craft Beer Rising festival at London’s Truman Brewery last week.

The multiple award-winning Peterborough beer producer, whose products are already available at pubs nationwide, also sells its drinks through Waitrose, Tesco and other supermarkets, and has recently secured a partnership with national restaurant chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

The latest addition to the Oakham range, which already includes popular favourites such as Citra, New World Order, Preacher and two-time International Beer Award winner Green Devil IPA, is Tiki Blonde.

The 4.5% ABV pale gold beer is made from Nelson Sauvin, Pacific Gem, Waimea and Pacific Jade hops, with a taste comprising complex and punchy aromas of lemon zest, passion fruit, tangerine and gooseberries with a dry bitter finish.

“Things have really been on the up for Oakham recently, with the Gourmet Burger Kitchen deal, beer festival sponsorships and our beers having won more awards, so we have high hopes that the launch of Tiki Blonde will add to this,” said the brewery’s managing director Adrian Posnett.

“We’re also very pleased that as a result of our appearance at Craft Beer Rising, we’re already getting Tiki Blonde out into some pubs, such as the Pelt Trader in Cannon Street, Indo in Whitechapel and the Old Red Cow in the Barbican.”

“Over the years we’ve built up a great relationship with our consumers and suppliers in areas like East Anglia and the Midlands, but the City is a comparatively unexplored new territory for us, so we really look forward to getting our name and beers known there, and also finding out more about the people who will be drinking them.”

Fans of the award-winning Oakham Ales have been raising a glass to more success recently following their latest competition triumphs.

Oakham have previously picked up awards at the Great British Beer Festival, the International Brewing Awards and from local and national competitions held by SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers), and have continued that success at the start of 2017.

Oakham won first and third places in the Golden Ales category in the East Anglia Beer Awards recently announced at the Colchester Beer Festival through Citra, the company’s biggest-selling brew, and Bishop’s Farewell, with Citra also taking bronze in the overall competition.

Oblivion, a 5.7% ABV Amber Ale with a strong spiced fruit aroma and rich malt flavour, was voted champion beer by drinkers at the recent Saints Winter Beer and Wine Fest, and there was yet more success for Green Devil IPA, which won the Premium Strong Beer category at the SIBA East regional competition, and will now take part in the SIBA national championships, in both the cask and keg categories.

Green Devil is also hoping for a hat-trick of wins at the International Beer Awards, with medal winners due to be announced next month and final awards given out in April.

Oakham’s American Pale ale has also been entered in the SIBA national awards, and Citra (in 500ml bottles) and new product Tiki Blonde have also been entered for the International Brewing Awards.

“We’re hugely proud of the continued popularity and success that our brews are enjoying at bars and beer festivals, and that’s a massive incentive to keep up the good work,” said Oakham’s managing director Adrian Posnett.

“These are exciting times for Oakham – as well as in pubs, we’re selling in supermarkets nationwide and have just seen our best-seller Citra added to the menu in the Gourmet Burger Kitchen restaurant chain. We’ve raised our profile through sponsorship of glasses at the recent Stevenage Beer Festival, and hopefully the launch of Tiki Blonde at the Craft Beer Rising festival in London this month will spread the word even further.

“We have a great relationship with our customers and our suppliers, and we really listen to what they say about our products, so to receive such public recognition is hugely rewarding.”

Oakham’s involvement with the Stevenage Festival is another example of how seriously the company takes public feedback and opinion.

“We had five brews on sale at the event – New World Order, Black Hole Porter, Bona Nox, Citra and Preacher – as well as our name on the glasses, which meant it was a huge opportunity for us to get our name known in the Hertfordshire area, so we made a point of attending in person to meet and talk to the people buying our products, to see what they think about them,” said Adrian.

“The event organisers are all regulars at the Half Moon in Hitchin, which is one of our stockists, so we were delighted when they offered us the chance to get involved as sponsors, and it was clear from the outset we were dealing with people who would take the job seriously – the beer orderer for this year’s event was called Martyn Beer!”

Oakham Ales have taken a major step forward in gaining a bigger national following after securing a deal with high street restaurant chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK).

The contract will see Oakham’s award-winning Citra golden ale sold in all 80 GBK outlets across the country, in 330ml bottles which is a new format for Oakham. It is hoped the GBK partnership will help raise awareness of Oakham’s brews and lead to further deals with other national food chains.

“We are delighted that GBK shares our passion for great-tasting real ales and is now stocking our award-winning Citra ale around the UK,” said Oakham’s managing director, Adrian Posnett.

"We pride ourselves on producing innovative beers packed with flavour and always using the highest quality ingredients and we know this is an approach shared by GBK.”

Citra was launched five years ago as Oakham’s fifth permanent beer and currently sells over one million pints per year, having surpassed the company’s best seller of the previous 23 years, Jeffrey Hudson Bitter (JHB).

Citra, with a 4.2% ABV, is a light, refreshing beer with a pungent grapefruit, lychee, and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry bitter finish, and came about after Oakham production director John Bryan discovered the hop on a research trip to the USA.

It was such a popular hit with beer lovers that it soon joined Oakham’s permanent range, and has further built its fan-base by being sold in 500ml bottles through Waitrose, Tesco and Co-operative food stores – and now the new format in GBK restaurants.

Like Citra, GBK have built up a devoted following since being launched in Battersea, south London, in 2001 by three businessmen, including world-renowned chef Peter Gordon.

Their meticulous approach to food, including handcrafted burgers and sauces made from scratch in each restaurant’s kitchen every day, make for a meeting of minds in their link-up with Oakham.

“We’re always on the lookout for new craft beers to add to our beer listing so it’s great to be able to add Citra to our menus nationwide,”
said GBK’s Head of Food, Tim Molema. “This refreshing single hop APA with lovely citrus bitterness perfectly pairs with our Blue Cheese Burger."

Oakham Ales has appointed Barking Dog Media to provide PR services and further increase the profile of the award-winning brewery.

The team at Barking Dog Media have taken over the running of Oakham’s press office to provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week support, including crisis management.

They will also support Oakham to develop a robust digital strategy and help them to create stronger digital content to have a stronger impact.
